Queens Wood Extension Exterior

N6 House Extension

We designed this modern extension to transform a Victorian terraced house in Highgate, N6. Our clients wanted to connect the living, dining, and kitchen areas of the house and create an additional play space. The existing layout of the house, with a deep-set kitchen and disconnected dining area, made this difficult. We explored various options and worked closely with our clients to settle on a double-storey design that fulfilled their brief.

House, Extension, Refurbishment, Basement, Conservation Area

Our design unifies the ground floor by creating a single change in level between the front room and the rear. We added new joinery for coat and shoe storage and inserted internal glass windows to visually connect the living and dining spaces. This also allowed light to flow from front to rear. The use of tall, slim-line doors and an external balcony area created a framed view of the woodland beyond and maximized the amount of light entering the house.
To comply with conservation area rules and planning policies, we designed a discreet extension with a sunken level and high-quality metal cladding. We also created a bespoke metal staircase with glass balustrading and open treads that allows light to pass down to the playroom below. The timber finish on each tread continues the timber floor that extends throughout the ground and lower ground levels. A frameless glass roof runs along the side of the extension, filling the space with light, and the use of ‘Pigmento’ VMZinc cladding in a reddish-brown uniform color complements the terraced garden setting.
