Islington Refurbishment

This project involved transforming an old shop in the Colebrooke Row Conservation Area of Islington into a modern new home for our clients. The end result is a great duplex flat with a bright kitchen, living space, and fantastic bedroom with lots of built-in storage. We obtained planning permission to change the use of the property to residential and formed new basement rooms beneath the ground floor kitchen and living room.

Flat, Refurbishment, Basement, Conservation Area

The site is located in the heart of Islington, just off Upper Street, and used to be a shop with the old shop front glazing and door. To blend in with the existing walls, we introduced new sash windows and a timber front door with new render and banded rustication. Our design received support from Islington Council, and planning was approved.

We focused on creating a great bedroom, study, and bathroom in the basement, knowing that the interior design of such a small flat would be important. We designed built-in storage, an open staircase, and a walk-on glass roof light above to bring even more light into the lower part of the flat.

The ground floor of the flat features a big living area and kitchen. The new timber sash windows at the front completely change the feel of the space. We used obscured glass in the lower sash for privacy, and our changes were supported by the planners at Islington. We planned details such as raised wall panels and ceiling coving to give the space a homely feel. The chimney breast is clad in a warm copper tile with an inset gel fire, and we included clever built-in storage under the staircase to make sure we were using every inch of the flat.
