London Flat Refurbishment
This project involved the transformation of an old shop in the Colebrooke Row Conservation Area in Islington into a modern new home for our clients. The end result is a great duplex flat conversion, with a bright kitchen and living space and a fantastic bedroom with lots of built in storage. Planning permission was gained for change of use to residential and new basement rooms were formed beneath the ground floor kitchen and living room.
Colebrooke Row Conservation Area
The site is in a Conservation Area in the heart of Islington, just off Upper Street. It used to be a shop, and still had the old shop front glazing and door. New sash windows and a timber front door was introduced. New render was also planned with banded rustication to blend in with the existing walls. Our design was given support by Islington Council and planning approved.
Interior Design Details
We knew that the interior design of such a small flat would be important. So we focussed on creating a great bedroom, study and bathroom in the basement. We designed built in storage, an open staircase and a walk-on glass roof light above. This is a nice touch to bring even more light in to the lower part of the flat. The ground floor of the flat is given over to a big living area and kitchen. The new timber sash windows at the front really change the feel of the space. We have used an obscured glass in the lower sash for privacy, and the planners at Islington supported the change.
We planned details such as raised wall panels and ceiling coving to give the space a homely feel. The chimney breast is clad in a warm copper tile with an inset gel fire. And we planned some clever built in storage under the staircase to make sure we were using every inch of the flat.
